Wind and solar generation in Mexico need to increase around six times by 2030, compared to 2022 levels, to be 1.5ºC compatible. Projected wind and solar rollout in Mexico falls short of benchmarks, with a 2030 capacity gap of nearly 58 GW
The guidance is expected to include clarifications around how to determine when a wind or solar project has started construction, the determination of which has several
The necessity of diversifying the renewable energy portfolio with wind energy in northern Mexico arises from its potential to enhance energy security, mitigate risks associated with dependence on a single energy source, and stabilize energy supply .
To meet the 35% clean energy target in 2024, Mexico needs at least 128.83 TWh or 42.56 TWh of additional clean energy generation. National solar PV capacity potential is estimated at 24,918 GW.1 This potential capacity could generate 50,196 TWh/yr or 137 times the 365 TWh estimated demand for Mexico in 2024.
Solar deployment can follow wind transmission. Targeted grid upgrades, if any, for wind, will benefit solar as well because solar resources exist in all areas of the country. Solar potential in Mexico is six times larger than wind, and the technology complements wind generation very well.
With over 2,000 hours of sunshine annually, the country has immense potential for solar energy production. The northwestern states, including Baja California and Sonora, have the ideal conditions for large-scale solar projects. Studies estimate that Mexico could generate 50,196 TWh/year of solar energy—137 times its domestic energy demand.
Figure 1 shows that Mexico’s renewable resources are well distributed throughout the country. National technical potential includes 24,918 GW2 of solar photovoltaics, 3,669 GW2 of wind, 2.5 GW3 of conventional geothermal, and 1.2 GW4 of additional capacity from existing hydropower facilities.
To do so, the CFE plans to develop 7 wind projects, 9 solar PV power plants (673 MW), 5 natural gas-fired CCGT power plants and one internal combustion project (240 MW) over a six-year period. Tenders will be launched for the development of the projects by the end of April 2025.
