Jakarta, June 29 – Indonesia’s Battery Corporation and China’s Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. (CATL) plan to bring a joint lithium-ion battery manufacturing plant into operation by the end of 2026, according to Dwi Anggia, spokeswoman for the Indonesian Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources.
The venture, valued at approximately $6 billion, involves Indonesia Battery Corp, state miner PT Aneka Tambang Tbk and a CATL consortium. Signed in 2022, the agreement covers the full battery value chain from nickel mining and processing to EV battery assembly and end-of-life battery recycling.
"With the battery for solar panels, the total production capacity of this plant could reach up to 40 GWh," he said, adding that discussion with the project owner was continuing. The battery plant will be built in West Java, while the remaining subprojects will be in eastern Indonesia's nickel-rich province of North Maluku.
Scheduled to commence production in 2026, the plant will produce up to 500,000 tons of SAF and renewable diesel – which can prevent 3 million tonnes of CO2 emissions per year.
