As presented in Fig. 2, the primary energy mix of Greenland changes notably between 2019 and 2050. In the reference scenario, oil constitutes around 80% of the primary energy consumption, with the rest being supplied mainly by hydropower.
High hydropower penetration is found to offer the highest cost reductions in Longyearbyen and Maniitsoq, whereas in Kotzebue high or medium wind penetration in the energy system is more beneficial. High investment costs may pose a problem for these communities and establishing governmental support is crucial for the transition .
